The old wives tale is that if snow stays on the ground 3 days it will come again. Our Christmas snow did and we got 6 inches Monday. It is STILL on the ground, tomorrow is day 6. Seriously, our front yard is like a hockey rink - smooth ice that is slick as snot. (Sorry about the gross image). If it stays 6 days will it come again twice, or twice as fast, or twice as much next time? The old wives didn't say.

Snowflake the goat
Here she is, the newest mammal at the farm. It's been a while since there were babies to enjoy there. Snowflake was born Monday, January 3 - after the Christmas snow but before the first big snow of 2011. Here she is with mom Heidi, a first-time mother. Aren't they lucky to live at Kathryn's farm?
Snowing "to beat the band"
When we woke up this morning, Alan said "it is snowing to beat the band." I'm not sure where that expression came from in our lives or exactly what it means, but that is what we say when the snow is really coming down.
This morning the snow was dry, like Western snow. We couldn't even make a snowball. But by noon it was sleeting and icy so we made a snowman with the neighbors. I'm afraid we will have an icy mess in the morning, but hopefully we won't lose power. Alan didn't have to go to work today, due to the snow. We got more than 6 inches, so I doubt he will tomorrow morning either.

It's about to snow AGAIN
OK, it will only be the first time this year, but the second time this season, and it is WEIRD to have so much snow. Well, it's not here yet, but it is all people have talked about since Friday. It is supposed to start snowing at midnight tonight and the winter storm advisory is posted until 6am Tuesday, so tomorrow is pretty much wiped out already. Wal-Mart at 2pm was CHAOS. There was NO 2% milk, only half gallons of skim and gallons of whole. The gas station was covered up. It is already COLD, so when the precip starts, it should stay snow and not ice. We'll see. I would LOVE to stay in all day tomorrow (:
I have a STACK of good books to read. And neighbor kids to play in the snow with (:
Yesterday we had a big bike adventure. Rode 10 miles on our mtn bikes all the way across Greenwood. We parked at the Waffle House on the bypass near our house and hit the trail to West Cambridge Park. It was in surprisingly good shape and the vistas were more wide open this time of year. Could see across the golf course and pond. The park is a gem and as soon as the DOT gets the Cambridge Ave bridge repair complete and reopens the entire trail, it will be GREAT!
From the park we took to the streets uptown and then onto the Heritage Trail, also in amazingly good shape. Could use some light maintenance, but considering it is 12 years old, that trail is in good shape too. Unlike West Cambridge, it is paved. Some minor vandalism, but nothing to destroy the usefulness of the trail.
The amazing thing about yesterday's ride was that we were out there at all. The weather gave us a 15-20 mph breeze and temps just above freezing, with a real feel of about 27. It was 27 yesterday in Kotz, AK, 30 miles above the Arctic Circle. Alan and I were well dressed. My first day in shoe covers. Still, 10 miles on my mtn bike in that wind WORE me out.
Post-nap we went to PC again for more basketball, a double header. The girls lost to Liberty and the boys lost BIG to UNCAsheville after their big man went down in the first half with an ankle injury. It's not so much fun when they lose. Alan's dad text us from the Clemson game, where the Tigers beat Miami. Go Tigers!

Happy New Year
I might be too tired to make sense in this post, but we are already a week into the new year and I haven't "said" a word. Uncharacteristically quiet for me.
I enjoyed all the bowl games I watched this year, and that was most of them. The 31st was a disappointing day of football. Well Clemson and Georgia were. I didn't want anyone to win the Florida State v. South Carolina game, but at least the right team lost.
We met my brother and sister-in-law at Grits & Groceries that morning and then they came to see our house, watch football and ring in the New Year. Which I did by going to bed at 10:45pm. Still, it was fun to spend time with them.
My car is repaired. I only swam once last week while it was in the shop, but this week I'm back on track MWF.
There's a new baby goat - Snowflake - on the farm. I took pictures today with our new camera we got for Christmas. Maybe I'll learn how to post those next.
Our pet rabbit Hopson, who'd been staying at the farm, passed from this life December 28th. Kathryn called me with the news, and Alan went from work to give him a proper burial under the pear tree. He would have been 8 in February, and I think that is pretty old for a bunny. FYI - it is hard to take pictures of bunnies and baby goats; they hop right out of the frame.
We are having bright but cold weather. Typical SC winter. I can tell that the days are getting longer, which makes me happy just to think about. I have not had any trouble writing 2011 instead of 2010. Well, I probably will now.
Anyway, Happy 2011!
